Why Electricity is Different

• Unlike other commodities, electricity can't be easily stored in large quantities.
• This makes it a "use it or lose it" situation, where supply must constantly meet demand.

Trading Electricity: Contracts and Markets

• Spot Markets: Buy and sell electricity for immediate delivery, like buying apples at a market.
• Futures Contracts: Agree to buy or sell electricity at a specific price on a future date.
• Options Contracts: Gain the right, but not the obligation, to buy electricity at a certain price by a certain date.

Key Players in the Electricity Market

• Generators: Produce electricity through power plants (coal, solar, wind).
• ISOs/RTOs: Independent System Operators and Regional Transmission Organizations manage the power grid, ensuring supply meets demand. They determine electricity prices through auctions.
• CME Group, ICE, EEX, Nord Pool: Major exchanges for electricity trading.

Understanding Electricity Prices

• Prices are influenced by supply and demand.
• High demand and low supply lead to higher prices.
• Weather conditions, renewable energy sources, outages, and consumer behavior can affect prices.

How to Research the Electricity Market

• Weather forecasts: Hot/cold weather impacts electricity needs.
• Renewable energy: Solar and wind power generation affect supply.
